East Brunswick
Schools
The East Brunswick
school district has approximately 8,900 students in grades K-12. The
outstanding faculty and staff, talented students, comprehensive curriculum and
wide variety of extra-curricular activities are the major factors in the
district's reputation for excellence in academics, athletics and the arts.
Students consistently score higher than national and state averages on standardized tests, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test. In 2004, the average scores of East Brunswick High School seniors were 551 on the verbal SAT and 586 on the mathematics test, for an impressive combined score of 1,137. Students also earn high ratings in county, regional and state competitions in a variety of areas, including language arts, foreign languages, mathematics, music, science, social studies and the visual arts.
Each school has a media center with print and electronic materials that support the curriculum. All media centers have multimedia stations, the capability of broadcasting throughout the school and extensive collections of fiction, non-fiction and periodicals appropriate to the grade levels in the school.
In grades three through twelve, students are required to do research related to their work in media, English, social studies and science. In addition to technological resources, books and other printed materials are an essential part of the research process. Students are also encouraged to read for pleasure.
In the elementary schools, each of which has a computer laboratory adjacent to the media center, students are taught basic keyboarding, how to use various types of software, and how to access information from a variety of technological and print sources, including the Internet. The students continue to build on these skills as they progress through the secondary schools. The emphasis is on technology as a tool for learning in all subject areas. Technology supports the instructional process – it is not an end in itself.
All eleven media centers have an automated catalogue and circulation system, enabling students to conduct a computer search of their school's media collection. All schools are connected to the INFOLINK Regional Union Catalog, which provides an opportunity for students to access and borrow from the collections of all public and school libraries in the region.
The media centers are integral links in the district's technological infrastructure, a state-of-the-art network that carries voice, video and data simultaneously at high speeds. The network provides students with quick access to the Internet and a vast array of educational opportunities.

Elementary
Schools
The eight
elementary schools serve children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Children
whose fifth birthday is on or before October 31 of the year of entrance are
eligible for admission to kindergarten. The emphasis in the elementary schools
is on building a strong foundation in the language arts, mathematics, science
and social studies. Beginning in first grade, classes in art, music and
physical education are taught by specialists in those subjects. Students may
begin instruction on a string instrument in fourth grade and a band instrument
in fifth grade. Students begin the study of either Spanish or French in third
grade. The English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) and bilingual education program
in Mandarin begin in kindergarten and continue through the other grades. Formal
identification of children for participation in gifted and talented education
begins in third grade. Special education starts with classes for handicapped
preschoolers, ages three to five, and continues through the high school.
Hammarskjold Middle School
Sixth and seventh graders attend Hammarskjold Middle School, where they
are assigned to groups that are called houses. This organizational pattern is
designed to help the students make the transition from the small elementary
schools to the larger middle school. Students have courses in language arts,
science, social studies, foreign language and mathematics. They also take
physical education and an elective course on an alternating day basis for the
entire year. The elective courses are art exploration, technology, band,
orchestra and chorus.
Students in both sixth and seventh grade take five eight-week exploratory courses as part of the cycle course. Computer literacy, health, art, theater arts and technology are in the sixth grade cycle. Computer literacy, health, theater arts, art and family and consumer science are in the seventh grade cycle.
Churchill Junior High School
Students in grades eight and nine attend Churchill Junior High
School, which is organized into departments for each subject. Required courses
include English, mathematics, social studies, science, and physical
education/health. Eighth graders also take reading and computer literacy and
ninth graders have career education. Eighth graders spend part of the school
day at the adjacent Smith Annex. Although ninth graders attend the junior high
school, their courses accrue credits for high
school graduation and the grades they receive are included in their high school
grade point average.
A comprehensive elective program gives students the opportunity to explore a
variety of subjects. Among the electives offered are art, family and consumer
science, technology education, theater arts, choral and instrumental music,
computer application and foreign languages.
East Brunswick High School
East Brunswick High School has a wide variety of courses designed to
meet the specific needs and interests of students in grades 10-12. Major
subject areas include English, social studies, mathematics, foreign language,
science and computer studies. Honors and advanced placement courses are
available in most subjects. The curriculum also includes physical
education/health and numerous electives in humanities, business, family and
consumer science, technology education, video production, visual arts and
music. A cooperative education program provides opportunities for students to attend
school in the morning and work for the rest of the day.
Adult and Community Education
The Adult and Community Education Program offers academic, vocational and
avocational courses for all adults, including high school students. A nominal
fee is charged for courses, with the exception of the Adult Basic Skills
program, which provides instruction in Citizenship preparation,
English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), Literacy, Adult Basic Education (ABE) and
high school completion (GED). There is no fee for the program, which is funded
by State and Federal grants through the New Jersey State Department of
education and provided as a community service. Students have the opportunity to
take the official General Education Development Test (GED) at the district's testing
center for a fee of $25.00. The Life Skills program provides a full range of
specifically designed academic, social and vocational skill training programs,
job development and supported employee service for adults who have a
developmental disability. There is a nominal fee for the program, which is run
cooperatively by the East Brunswick Board of Education and the Division of
Developmental Disabilities of the NJ Department of Human Services.
Undergraduate college courses for credit are offered in cooperation with
Middlesex County College and graduate courses for credit are offered in
cooperation with Kean University.
